Logan Perry | The Great Liberation by Hearing in the Intermediate States

Juuku Pass, Kyrgyzstan

The Great Liberation by Hearing in the Intermediate States, is a graphic score which was inspired by a glacier collapse on Juuku Pass in rural Kyrgyzstan. In the creation, I was seeking specifically to portray the incredible speed and intensity of glacial collapses, and also the physical space that glacial collapses encompass. By limiting myself to a binary system of colors, I have created a piece which is motionless from afar but rapidly changing upon close inspection; a gargantuan block of static noise which evolves like a Jackson Pollock the more analysis it's given.

The title comes from the literal translation of the Bardo Thodol, more commonly known in the west as the Tibetan book of the dead. The Bardo Thodol describes an intermediate state between death and reincarnation, and the goal of being in this state is to liberate the soul from the cycle of reincarnation. This concept, along with other concepts of Mahayana Buddhism, are concepts I've recently become interested in exploring in improvisation.

The Great Liberation by Hearing in the Intermediate States is scored for any instrumentation.
